Fifth and Sixth grade students at West Sayville Christian have joined forces with Save the Children and their Knit One, Save One Project. The project seeks to take action for the 4 million babies who die each year within the first month of life in poor countries.

Research shows that 50 percent of the 4 million newborn deaths that occur each year could be prevented if mothers and children in poor countries had access to a simple package of health resources, including education on basic care like keeping a baby warm by covering the head. It is in this aspect that students helped out by knitting baby caps that will be distributed to pregnant women and mothers of newborn infants overseas in countries like Ethiopia and Afghanistan.

In addition to their knitting efforts, the students each wrote a personal letter to President-elect Obama urging him to lead the way in helping to save millions of babies globally.
