Mollie entered the 6Th Annual Express this contest through the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Her poem won first place in the poetry division for the 7th/8th grade. The theme was domestic/dating violence.

The poem is called "I Wish"

I Wish
My sister’s boyfriend was tall and lean
Who would have thought he could be so mean?
Day after day she only told me
How he hit her and she just wanted to be free
I Wish
If only I told someone else all these things
I wouldn’t have to live with the guilt that it
brings
She just tried to hide from all of his pain
If she stayed with him she’d have nothing to gain
I Wish
If she did something that he didn’t love
He’d get her back with a slap and a shove
Then he’d say sorry with candy or flowers
Then he’d repeat this every few hours
I Wish
If she said something he didn’t want her to say
He’d get her back then say “sorry” the next day
Sometimes he’d tell her she’s dumb or she’s fat
Sometimes “kill yourself” but she’d never do that
I wish
Why did he have to do this to her?
Why on Earth did this have to occur?
I wish I stopped it so I wouldn’t dread
The fact that he killed her, my sister is dead.
