Facial peels are a cosmetic treatments that can improve the appearance of the skin by aiding in the elimination of blemishes, age spots, fine lines, wrinkles and sun-damaged skin. Facial Peels contain acids that dissolve the intercellular glue that binds dead skin cells to the surface of the skin, that which in turn will improve the skins texture, clarity and tone. Facial Peels are performed by an Licensed Esthetician, Dermatologist or a Plastic Surgeon.

There are many types of peels available to choose from. Here is a simple breakdown on what you can expect from these 3 types of popular peels.

Glycolic Peel: Glycolic which is also known as Alphahydroxy Acid (AHA) is derived from sugar cane to produce a light to strong peel (depending on the strength) of the outermost damaged layers of the skin. Glycolic Acid has long been one of the most important skin care ingredients available. The unique characteristic of this AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) is its small molecule size, which allows it to penetrate the skin deeper into the skin. This makes glycolic an excellent catalyst for rejuvenating the skin. In addition to being highly effective for sun damaged and aged skin, glycolic is an exceptional cosmetic option for individuals who are seeking smoother, more youthful, and radiant skin.

Lactic Peels: A lactic peel as its name implies is derived from milk. A lactic peel is one of the most gentle and mildest cosmetic chemical peels available on the market.

Lactic acid's larger molecule size makes it less irritating than glycolic acid. Lactic Acid is best suited to those who prefer a gentler peel or for more sensitive skin types. Lactic Acid is recommended for those that are new to peels, as well as those that have used other exfoliators for a long period and want to further results. Those that have used Glycolic for a long period of time and wish to reinitiate effective exfoliation will be surprised at how effective Lactic can be at boosting cell turnover - just like when you used Glycolic for the first time!

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic Acid, also know as a Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) is derived from Willow Bark. Salicylic Acid is a highly effective superficial peeling agent, oil reducer and pore cleanser. Due to its larger molecule size than Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid works more effectively on the skin's surface which in turn is one of the most effective ingredients to combat the cause of facial oil, acne, scaring and blemishes. Salicylic Acid is an excellent rejuvenation addition to as well as and alternative to Glycolic.

Facial peels are purely cosmetic in nature. They do not slow down the aging process, nor do they cure chronic skin conditions. As with any procedure, make certain that your technician is qualified and capable of performing theses services. Pay close attention to the information you'll receive regarding skincare prior to your treatment as well as post treatment care.

That being said, whether you have a clear complexion, occasional breakouts, problem skin, sun damage, or just want to fight off those visible signs of aging, adding a facial peel to your skin care routine will deliver the effective results you desire.
