The Sayville Fire Department held a blood drive on April 11th in memory of Honorary Captain Wilbur Ritter, who perished in the line of duty after responding to an alarm on Main Street on August 28, 2006. He was the Chairman of Sayville’s Blood Drive for about 20 years and believed in the importance of donating blood. Wilbur donated 16 gallons of blood himself over the years.

Sayville Fire Department members and area residents came out and donated 67 units of life-saving blood. According to Long Island Blood Services, Long Island hospitals require 800 pints of blood per day just to meet routine needs. If a disaster were to strike, even more blood would be needed. Many people don’t realize that one in three people will need a blood product sometime during his or her lifetime.

Kudos to the residents of Sayville and neighboring towns who came out and did their part to help save lives. Donors received special donor coupons from Oysterman’s Restaurant and Pub in Sayville. In addition, home safety kit door prizes are being given to a few lucky donors. The home safety kit included a fireproof document safe, smoke/CO detector, first aid kit and fire extinguisher.
