Read Across America was created in 1998 as a one-day event on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2 to celebrate Reading. Over the years it has proven to be the largest Reading celebration in the US. One of the main objectives of this event is to show our children that Reading is important. This creative event unites adults and children alike and if you have never read to a child before you do not know what you are missing.

Something magical happens when you sit down with a book and a child is at your feet. The written words, when spoken aloud, leap off the page and come alive to you and your young audience. The reader becomes an actor, the child’s imagination ignites and the both of you are off and running, experiencing the joy of living out a story – a thrilling mystery with Nancy Drew, the exciting early life of young Ben Franklin. No doubt about it, the sky’s the limit when you open a book!

I had the honor of reading to Mrs. Geraldine Batterberry’s third grade class at Cherry Avenue Elementary School – they are an awesome group of youngsters! Intelligent, funny, very well behaved and they liked me and the 2 books I brought with me! This is my second Read Across America and I look forward to participating next year, as well. I wonder what books I’ll bring to read? I guess it really depends on the age of the kids – no matter, I’ve been reading since 1st grade (I think), so I’ve got plenty of favorites to choose from.
