For over 83 years, Prince of Peace School (formerly known as St. Lawrence the Martyr School) on Main Street has educated the children of the South Shore. The Prince of Peace gym has served as the home base for CYO basketball, as well as sports for the children of the School .

At the same time, the Gym has been the site of countless gatherings enjoyed by young and old alike – meetings, choir practice, Boy and Girl Scouts, dinners for those in need, Lenten Soup Suppers, Evenings of Recollection, the Mardi Gras, Vacation Bible School, and, at times, even the celebration of the Mass.

As with all things, the Gym has deteriorated and become in desperate need of renovation. Through a collaborative effort of parents, community leaders and businesses, a Renovation Campaign is underway.

The goal is to raise $100,000; the first $70,000 to go towards the replacement of the gym floor with a safer and more cushioned alternative. Any additional funds raised will go towards further refurbishments such as matting for the concrete walls, new moveable basketball backboards, retractable bleachers that can be used for games and other group events, and renovations to improve kitchen safety.

To kick the Campaign off, the Gym Renovation Committee is selling Raffle tickets to a limit of 300. If all 300 tickets are sold, the winner will receive a fantastic $10,000. Those who are able and willing to take a larger step towards supporting this effort, also have opportunities to become involved.

Further information and raffle tickets can be obtained by calling Susan Connolly at 563-7756.
