Lori and Vito
Giambanco are the owners of Sal's Pizzeria and Catering in
Sayville. Managing the Pizzaria is Vito's brother, Jerry Giambanco.
Vito's parents
came to the States in May of 1980 from Sicily and in September they
bought the business from the original owners. After marrying in
1990, Lori and Vito took over the family restaurant and have
made the place what it is today - an exceptional source of
Italian recipes, prepared and served with care to thousands
of happy customers. Sal's Pizza has been in
the family and in Sayville for 28 years.
Sal's Pizzeria
has been a Chamber member for many years and has always been
involved with the community, supporting the Sayville Little
League as well as many Sayville School related activities
such as: football teams
and year books. They have been sponsoring many fundraisers
and always donated pies for events.
Lori grew up in
Holbrook and Vito in Italy and Sayville is their second
home. "When we eat here it is like we're eating at
home," Lori said, but like a lot of small business in
town, their second home is dealing with the raising prices
and with the fear of being able to staying afloat. According
to Lori the flour went up 350% since January, they had to
raise the cost per slice to $1.75 and the
prices are going up from .50 to 1.50 across the menu.
Lori Giambanco
commented about the cost increase: "We hate doing it but we
need to survive. This increase is faster then the increase
in gas cost and it will put a lot of people out of business.
The Bagels shops are getting hurt too."
Sal's Pizzeria
has been in business for 28 years but they will not go back
on their quality. They would rather raise the prices then
compromise on quality. Lori and Vito Giambanco are food
connoisseurs, love good food and they will not serve
something they, themselves will not eat. Lori added: "We pay
top dollar for cheese, veal, chicken and other ingredients
and we refuse to compromise our integrity even though some
people may not understand that. Some people appreciate the
quality but some appreciate price and we can't worry about
that."
As far as the
location is concerned, Lori admitted this is the best
location even thought the rent is going up every year since they have a
yearly lease on the space. The are located in the Stop &
Shop Shopping Center at 183 Montauk Highway.
