Saturday February 2, 2008, Sayville's own Blue Island
Seafood Market
won First Prize for its New England Clam Chowder at the Long
Island Chowder Contest.
Competing in the event were top chefs from top eateries from
all over Long Island, including Bigelow's from Rockville
Center, Brewster's from the Hamptons, the Irish Coffee Pub
in Islip, Riverbay in Williston Park, the Snapper Inn in
Oakdale and H20 in Smithtown.
Blue Island Seafood Market opened its doors just 8 months
ago in June, and this was the Market's first time entering
the annual contest.

Quartuccio, the owner of Blue Island Seafood Market, who
grew up in Sayville and spent many summers clamming on the
Great South Bay, had this to say about the victory: "The key
ingredient in our soup is the Great South Bay Clams. I have
no doubt that the flavor and texture of this wonderful local
commodity is what makes our soup so good." Blue Island's
chef James Elowson concurs: "The Great South Bay clam is a
great ingredient to work with. The recipe we used in the
contest and use every day in the Market is the result of
months of experimentation with different recipes.
Throughout, the most crucial ingredient was the Great South
Bay clam itself, which lends a great amount of flavor and
body to the soup. The hard work of the whole Blue Island
Team paid off and we ended up with a terrific recipe and a
great soup."
