Recently at Sayville’s Summerfest, members of the Sayville Fire Department demonstrated their auto extrication techniques at a simulation that included a car with a partially ejected unrestrained passenger, a trapped driver, and baby in the rear seat.

Members of Community Ambulance teamed up with the firefighters to simulate medical care for all three patients.

Legislator Bill Lindsay was on hand to view the demo and offer his gratitude to Sayville’s volunteers.

Fort those who did not view the demo, it went as follows: Sayville firefighters and Community Ambulance members made a quick assessment of the scene and patients.

Firefighters then stabilized the vehicle using cribbing (wood blocks) so that safe work could begin to access and extricate the patients. Community Ambulance members quickly removed the unharmed restrained baby from the unlocked rear door.

While firefighters used the Hurst spreader hydraulic tool, better known as the Jaws of Life, to open the driver and passenger front doors, members of Community Ambulance worked on stabilizing the two remaining injured driver and passenger.

Firefighters used the Hurst cutting hydraulic tool to cut through the vehicle’s steel posts in order to completely remove the roof. This tough tool work was performed to facilitate safe access and removal of the patients.

The critically injured front passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected through the windshield, was then slid onto a backboard on the hood of the car, carefully turned onto his back and then put onto a stretcher for transport. The driver was then carefully moved onto a backboard and placed onto a stretcher for transport.

The purpose of this demo was not only to allow the community to view rescue techniques, but to stress the importance of always wearing your seatbelt. Keep an eye out for the video of the extrication demo at www.islip.tv
