The Suffolk County Legislature’s Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay, County Executive Steve Levy, Assemblywoman Ginny Fields and Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan joined local community leaders today for a Grand Opening Celebration for Phase I of a 4-acre Community Youth Complex which will serve as a comprehensive sports and activity hub for enrichment of the lives of children and families through sports.

Phase I of the Sayville sports complex, the brain-child of local community activist and developer Terry Cullen, will provide the opportunity for the following activities:

  • Indoor Lacrosse

  • Indoor Soccer

  • Lunchtime Golf

  • Mommy & Kids’ Fitness

  • Basketball

  • Indoor Track

  • Speed Training

  • Birthday Parties

Today’s grand opening began with a performance by the Ovations Dance Company and culminated with the ceremonial ribbon-cutting.

“This facility will be a tremendous benefit to not only the immediate community, but to much of Suffolk County because it will provide a wholesome and safe place for our children to play,” said Presiding Officer Lindsay. “Mr. Cullen deserves a tremendous amount of credit for his fortitude in creating this facility.”

“This is a dream come true to be able to provide a safe place for the kids to have after-school activities,” said Terri Cullen, of Interstate Sports Academy, Inc. “As we all know, today’s kids are our future leaders.”

“The Town has made this project the highest priority,” said Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan. “It will provide a long unmet need for wholesome recreation facilities for families with children in our community.”

Assemblywoman Ginny Fields stated: “This facility has been long anticipated by my constituents. It will be a place for our youngsters to release energy and give them something positive to do.”

The future Phase II of the Sorts Complex will involve a public-private partnership between Suffolk County and the Interstate Sports Academy. In addition, New York State, through Assemblywoman Ginny Fields, has pledged very generous financial assistance. The not-for-profit organization South Shore Community Youth Center Fund is accepting donations, which will give every child the opportunity to be part of a team.
