In seeking a way of assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi, the Religious Education Program of St. Lawrence Parish registered with Catholic Extension to be partnered with a parish in one of these two devastated regions through their Parish Partnership Program. We were looking for a way for the children of our parish to help other children thereby teaching them to be good stewards of their time, talent, and treasure and to care for their neighbors in need no matter what the distance.

The parish assigned to us was Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Biloxi, MS. We were advised by the parish of their current needs which were the repair of the infrastructure of their church and school and the replacement of the school's playground which was destroyed by the hurricane.

Beginning in March, the children in our Religious Education Program began fundraising to rebuild their playground. The 2nd and 3rd grade children raised $900.00 in a bake sale. The 4th and 5th grade classes contributed raffle baskets to our annual Family Bingo Night which raised and additional $600.00 towards this effort. The 6th graders recycled cans and bottles and contributed $450.00. The St. Lawrence Youth Group along with the children in our Confirmation Program held a Car Wash and through the generosity of the car owners seeking their service, raised $370.00.
