Blood Drive in Sayville at Sunrise Drive Elementary School - fundraisers - 1/29/2011
Grace Papagno

Although forecasts of yet another inch of snow loomed on the news channels, Cub Scout Pack 184 hosted its 4th Annual Blood Drive at Sunrise Drive Elementary School on Friday, January 28th between 4:00 PM and 8:30 PM.

As I entered the bright and pleasant cafeteria, I was greeted by two smartly-uniformed cub scouts and their leaders. Mr. Rich LaMar, Wolf den leader and Mr. Mike Cameron, Pack Committee mentor together with Ryan LaMar, Wolf (2nd grade scout) and Max Procopio, Webelo (4th grade scout) welcomed me with smiles and lots of information. Scout Thomas Kleppan joined to help his pack a bit later. It seems that helping people is one of the pack’s goals and this year, because of the near record-breaking inclement whether, blood supplies are exceptionally low. “There’s a shortage. That means people in the hospital could die. We’re helping,” the young scouts told me. “We tell the donors where to go on the line and when they are finished, we take them to get juice and cookies.”

Leader Cameron reported that in the past the Cub Scout Pack’s drive has collected 30 to 35 pints of blood. “We’re hoping for that or better,” he said. Rich LaMar explained that “Blood Services contacts our past donors. The roads are clear so we hope people come on down.”

The Donor Specialists I met were up-beat and cheerful. Debbie Moore explained that there are many mobile units on Long Island and over 100 coworkers. “We have to arrive a half hour before the donors. It’s amazing how we set up – in about 15 minutes. We really are mobile! I love my job. I love the donors because everyone is happy to help people so everyone is in a good mood.”

Hopefully you were part of this blood drive, but if for some reason you missed it, please check with the to find out where and when the next drive will be.
