Why
go to Broadway when you can stay in Bayport?
Have some enchanted evening right here in
town. Bayport-Blue Point High School is
presenting Rogers and Hammerstein's "South
Pacific". There will be four performances,
including a free show for senior citizens.
Every year the music department works hard to
put on a high quality show and this year is no
exception. The students of Bayport-Blue Point
Schools have done a great job on this classic
musical tale of love and mystery, set during
World War II.
In October the staff at the high school starts
planning the school show, when the musical is
selected and auditions start. The leads in
this play are high school students, but there
also other parts played by junior high and
elementary school children. There are about
130 students involved in this year's
production of "South Pacific" - from the
actors to stage crew to wardrobe and the
orchestra that plays all the music.
Paul Weber, music teacher at the high school,
is expecting about 300 people a night to be
entertained by his hard working thespians. The
senior citizen show usually has 150 people
attending. The money that is collected from
ticket sales goes right back into the school
and helps fund future plays.
Since it is a musical, the talented cast has
put all their effort into singing and dancing.
Everyone involved is very passionate about the
theatre and it shows.
Gabrielle Postiglione, who plays Bloody Mary
said, "I am so thrilled about this musical.
Since November, we have been working hard
everyday after school learning lines."
Jake Nowicki is Luther Billis in the show and
has done many school plays. He has been
dancing since he was 3 years old and he wants
pursue it after high school. Jake really
appreciates the teachers that help the
students put on this musical.
John D'Ambrosio plays Lt. Joseph Cable. He is
a sophomore and this is his second school
show. John said, "I love it! Putting on the
musical is the best part of the year." He
expects a really great show because everyone
has been working so hard to prepare for it.
Anthony Boucher is Emile de Becque, the French
planter. He hopes to pursue musical theater
after high school. "I am happy to be a part of
this show and I am very excited".
Stephanie Tubiolo plays Ensign Nellie Forbush.
A senior this year with hopes of being a vocal
major in college, she has been in school plays
since she was freshman. Last year Stephanie
was a lead in "The Music Man." She said, "The
director is wonderful and all the teachers are
very supportive of us."
Wash that cold right out of your hair and warm
up on a February night to see the hard work
and dedication of the students of Bayport -
Blue Point High School.
