6 Year Old Jessie's Wish to Become a Pirate granted at The Pirate Festival - fundraising news - 6/11/2013
Press Release

The Long Island Maritime Museum is working with the Make A Wish Foundation to grant a young boy’s wish of becoming a pirate at the 4th Annual Pirate Festival on Saturday, June 15th. Jessie, a six year old from Medford with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, loves the excitement that seems to always surround pirates and dreams of finding buried treasure.

“I received a phone call from Make A Wish and was excited to be able to work with them to make this amazing kid’s wish of becoming a pirate come true.” Said Kathleen Prokesch, the museum’s Director of Special Events. “Jessie will be our VIP Buccaneer for the day and we have lined up a fantastic afternoon for him. Not only will he be a featured player in our Pirate shows, Jessie will have his very own private sail with the pirates aboard our oyster sloop Priscilla. The pirates tell me that we do have buried treasure located somewhere on the grounds at the museum and I bet Jessie can help us find it!”

The Pirate Festival, now in its 4th year, will take place on the grounds of the museum on June 15th and 16th. The event, designated as a “Best Bet” by Newsday features hordes of pirates who invade West Sayville to entertain and delight children and their families. In addition to historical reenactments, the festival includes treasure hunts, live music, costume contests and a thieves market, featuring pirate and nautical themed vendors.

Admission is $8.00 per person, and is free for children ages 5 and under. Museum members may present their S.E.A. card at the gate to take advantage of complimentary admission to the festival.

The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under a license agreement with Suffolk County

Parks, serves to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.
