The following story was written by one of the 3rd grade students in Mrs. Geraldine Batterberry’s Class, Cherry Avenue Elementary. “The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs” by Betty G. Birney was the inspiration behind the story.
There are so many wonders in Sayville that it was hard to pick just seven but I narrowed it down to…
My Nana’s weeping willow tree because when I am in it I feel like a fairy with the branches blowing in my face. It feels sooo magical. Sometimes I even see a bunny or two hiding under the tree.
Another wonder is Ralph’s ice store…a place where they just make the flavors dance on your tongue (note to self: “Blue Hawaii” makes your tongue blue!).
The third wonder is the docks at the Sayville beach. Looking at all the different types of great boats makes me dream of getting one. I wish I could hop on one and sail away into the breeze and mysterious night.
Wonder number four is the Library because I love to read. I could stay up all night reading from book to book to book. I would sit under the big tree in the children’s room. I would stay even after all the workers and owners left!
My fifth wonder is my house because that is where I do everything and feel safe. I love snuggling and reading a book at night.
Wonder number six is Carvel because that is where I get my favorite soft serve chocolate ice cream. I love to sit on the bench outside and devour my ice cream.
Wonder number seven is the movie theatre because I love watching movies. It takes my breath away at how good the popcorn is! I’d give the movie “5 thumbs up!”
Those are all the reasons I live in Sayville. If you don’t, too bad for you!
