WHAT IS CYSTIC
FIBROSIS?
Cystic Fibrosis is the nation's most common
life threatening disease in the US, taking as many as three
lives a day. One in 20 adults are symptom-less carriers of the disease.
The disease produces a thick, sticky mucus that clogs the respiratory
& digestive systems. From an early age, most young patients need
frequent hospitalization and close medical attention.
In August of 1989, researchers supported by the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation identified the gene responsible for causing cystic
fibrosis (CF). The complex gene that causes CF also
contains the answer to cure it. In 1993, the first gene therapy studies
involving people with CF began. In 1997, the FDA approved the
aerosolized form of Tobramycin, TOBI, which increases the concentration
of the drug that goes to the actual site of the lung infection.
All of the scientific advantages that have extended and improved the
quality of life for a young adult with CF can be made only with
the help of the people like yourself. The money raised from the Run for Cystic
Fibrosis will be invested in research that will soon make CF
stand for Cure Found!
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was recently named one of the
nation's top ten "charities you can trust" by Smartmoney, the
magazine of the Wall Street Journal. The Foundation puts its money to
work as efficiently as possible and is proud to receive such a
recognition. 91% of all the money raised goes directly to research and
with your help we will maintain this statistic.
